ESG are an incredible trio. The story goes that their mother wanted them to start a band together so they would stay out of trouble. They ended up becoming not only incredibly influential on punk, funk, house, and hip hop, but of only a handful of all-female bands that are still active. My favorite song is “Moody.” That baseline just feels like walking down the street with a little swagger, paired with those sassy lyrics, I just love it.

The Guy album is a classic, but “it was too hard for the pop charts” is simply not true. It reached 27 on Billboard 200 and is DOUBLE PLATINUM! It was 34 on year End Billboard 200 chart and number 1 on year end R&B/HipHop Billboard end of year charts. Pop doesn’t always mean bad R.A it’s okay man (I say that as major fan). Many of the illest ever (in every genre have gold/platinum albums). Many also don’t sell a lot at all or who are ILL AF PS GZA Labels was a creative wordplay song using labels. Every Record Label sucks dick wasn’t that. Illest in Wu are Method Man, GZA, INS, Rae & Ghost. Best lyrically/emcees Meth & INS.

I was actually shocked on QuestLove podcast (which Phonte is on as an ILL emcee and historian as well) when they had Pharoahe Monch on and Phonte said The Equinox was his favorite album of theirs. I was like what that’s clearly not as ILL as first 2 classics. It’s better than you guys made it sound, but it was def their weakest overall imo. No clue how someone as ILL as Phonte would think that 😅😆😅. Pharoahe def in my top1-7 GOAT tier.

Beastie Boys were not the same when he quit. Why did DJ Hurricane quit the Beastie Boys? Because his black peers kept making fun of him for DJing for a bunch of white boys. They’d also say stuff like, “Why do you work for the white man? They should be working for you! They should be your beo t ch! Don’t be a white man’s beo t ch!” DJ Hurricane felt peer pressure and shame from his black peers so he quit the Beastie Boys. If any of this is wrong then prove it! Otherwise, this is what happened.

Bob James has nothing of interest to say here about sampling outside of his not 'getting his.' He would be forgotten for his mediocre music but not for being sampled which has afforded him a long career, and for that he should bow down to Run DMC rather than lament it.

I agree with some of this. I wouldn’t necessarily say his music was mediocre. I like a lot of his stuff. But it is definitely true that no one would know who he is, without RMC and others. Also, jazz is black music. So, we can look at how he made his money over the years.
